What is ADHD Life Coaching?
An ADHD Life Coach is someone who helps people decrease their struggles with their specific ADHD symptoms, and nurture positive change. I do this by partnering with the individual client (or group) in weekly sessions to examine the areas of their life they deem problematic and want to change. I help the client foster awareness of what aspects of their life are helping or hindering them from achieving success. This relationship helps the client bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be. I do not tutor students with ADHD in whatever subject in which they may be struggling. I do not tell my clients what to do and solve their problems for them. I do not prescribe medication. Each session we discuss the clients’ goals, break down the weekly chaos, and brainstorm creative solutions and strategies to help the client become the person they want to be.
How do you combine Coaching and Mental Health Counseling?
Counseling sessions can work very similarly to ADHD Life Coaching, but the ethical scope of practice is much larger. In counseling sessions, we can still do ADHD Life Coaching, as coaching is a part of mental health counseling. While there are certifications for ADHD Life Coaching, which I have, Life Coaching is not, at this time, a licensed profession like Mental Health Counseling. Sometimes coaching doesn’t quite provide enough help for clients, and sometimes the clients concerns would benefit from both counseling and coaching. I can provide individual, couples, and family therapy both virtually or in person through Grant Park Counseling Group. The sessions are 50-minutes long. Not to get to jargon-y, but I operate from a social constructionist viewpoint. What that means is I believe that you are the expert in your own life, and will work collaboratively with you to help you reach your therapy goals. This kind of therapy also highlights what behaviors and beliefs have been influenced by forces larger than us- society and culture. That’s not to say that we just blame everything on society and take no responsibility for our actions and life. Of course we can’t do that. This kind of therapy empowers the client to re-write their own narrative, fosters self-awareness, and provides space to brainstorm solutions to problems. There is no one right or wrong way to live your life, so I want to meet you where you’re at currently, honor what is important to you, and help you grow to live the life you want.
Because many clients with ADHD also have other diagnoses or concerns they struggle with, I also specialize in working with individuals who are experiencing feelings of depression, anxiety, stress, bipolar disorder, overwhelm, are going through difficult life transitions, experience low self-esteem, feel stuck, and have blurred boundaries.
